Judith was the kind of person who brought light into a room simply by being there. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen and valued. When you spoke with her, you walked away feeling better simply from having spent time with her.

"Her compassion saved a life,"

"Her spirit lit the room."

She carried an extraordinary confidence in herself, combined with warmth and generosity. Judith was a happy and loving person who had a remarkable way of changing lives through kindness and genuine care for others. Helping people came naturally — it was simply who she was.

Family and Life

Family meant everything to Judith. She shared many happy years with her husband and took great joy in her children and grandchildren. Some of her happiest moments were spent on family holidays, creating memories and enjoying time together.

She loved long walks with her Labrador, Bonzo, and Cornwall held a special place in her heart. Walking along the Cornish coast and capturing the beauty of the landscape through her photography brought her great happiness. Her faith was also important to her, and she found comfort and meaning in attending church.

A Life-Saving Act of Courage

One bright winter morning, Judith set out for a walk with Bonzo her dog, near a field with a lake. Ahead of her, she noticed a man sitting by the water’s edge with his head in his hands. He appeared deeply distressed. When she asked if he was alright, he quietly replied that he could not go on. Moments later he began walking into the lake.

Realising the danger, Judith immediately called emergency services. As she spoke to the operator, the man continued deeper into the water until it reached his shoulders. Soon he was floating face down. Judith knew she could not wait. Calling out for help from some nearby young men — who did not respond — she quickly removed her boots and outer clothes and went into the lake herself. The muddy water made it difficult to move, but she pushed forward, swimming roughly 75 metres until she reached him. He was unconscious.

With determination and strength, Judith managed to turn him onto his back and guide him toward the shore. With assistance from someone nearby, she pulled him safely onto the bank, checked that he was breathing, and placed him in the recovery position until the ambulance arrived and rushed him to hospital.

Three weeks later she received a phone call from the man’s daughter, Lorraine. Her father, Robert McCullagh, had been under enormous strain while caring for his wife, and the pressure had led to the moment Judith had encountered by the lake.

Robert later nominated Judith for a National Life Savers Award. At the ceremony in London, she was reunited with him, and he described her as

"A True Angel"

During the visit she also met Prime Minister Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street. For those who knew Judith, this extraordinary moment simply reflected the person she had always been — someone who cared deeply and stepped forward when others needed help.
